Along a 500m stretch of Elwyn Creek’s headwaters, there are about ten small hot and warm springs.
The Springs are easy to find and are close to the Timberline. On the southwest side of Elwyn Creek, extensive orange tufa deposits host a series of warm ponds, with a few Warm Springs on the other side.
The water is odourless and clear. It has a high concentration of dissolved minerals, particularly bicarbonate, sodium, and calcium.
A small vent halfway between the creek and the farthest pool produces the hottest water, which is 36 degrees Celsius. This is a meadowed area on Mount Edziza’s northwest flank. The headwaters of Elwyn Creek include around 10 tiny hot and warm springs across a 0.5km span.
The Springs are beside the Timberline and are simple to discover. Numerous warm ponds are located on the southwest bank of Elwyn Creek among large orange tufa deposits, with a few Warm Springs on the opposite side.
The water is very clear and odourless. It contains a lot of dissolved minerals, including calcium, sodium, and bicarbonate.
The hottest water, which has a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius, comes from a tiny vent located midway between the stream and the furthest pool. On the northwest side of Mount Edziza, there is a meadow.
2025 Geothermal research update: Mount Edziza / Spectrum Range
In April 2025, Geoscience BC released a new Phase 1 (desktop) assessment looking at geothermal potential across Northwest BC. Using a “Play Fairway” style approach, the study pulled together 18 separate datasets and produced geothermal favourability maps for multiple geothermal system types (including volcanic-hosted and structurally controlled systems). Geoscience BC
For readers interested in Mount Edziza specifically, the study highlights the Mount Edziza / Spectrum Range area as particularly favourable for additional geothermal resource assessment (along with the Iskut–Unuk River area). Geoscience BC
Important note: the report is careful to say its “favourability” is relative within the study area, and that additional research is needed to confirm and refine the most promising zones. Geoscience BC
If you want to go deeper, the project page includes the full report and map appendices (including digital map packages), which are useful if you like digging into how they ranked heat, permeability, and fluids across the region. Geoscience BC
