These hot springs are one of the four sets of springs in the Mount Edziza area. The Mess Creek Hot Springs are the southernmost set, located 7 km south of Mess Lake on the west side of Mess Creek. The temperature is 43° C (109° F) in the pool, which measures 20 meters across.

again no photos yet, but this one is close to a lake, and a floatplane could be used

Mess Lake Warm Springs

The Mess Lake Warm Springs area is notable for large tufa/travertine deposits. A provincial geological mapping report describes hot-spring carbonate deposits southeast of Mess Lake covering roughly 80 hectares, spread across flat, poorly drained valley bottoms, with spring vents aligned along north-trending faults. These deposits include broad terraced tufa surfaces and other carbonate features that make the area significant from a geological perspective.

Older technical literature also notes that spring discharge in the Mess Lake area has varied through time, including accounts that flow was reduced compared with earlier observations. Conditions at remote springs can change from year to year depending on groundwater routing, seasonal runoff, and natural shifting of vents.

Access note:

This is a remote wilderness region with no road access. Mount Edziza Park guidance emphasizes minimal facilities and wilderness travel requirements. Aircraft access is used in parts of the region, but park guidance also warns against impacts to sensitive volcanic and mineral-deposit terrain.

Geothermal context

In 2025, Geoscience BC released a Phase 1 desk-top assessment of geothermal potential in Northwest BC and identified Mount Edziza / Spectrum Range as particularly favourable for further geothermal resource assessment. This does not imply development at Mess Lake or Mess Creek, but it confirms ongoing scientific interest in the geothermal potential of the broader volcanic province.
