These remote, rarely seen springs are the warmest in the Northwest Territories. Hot water seeps from steep
boulder slopes at an elevation of roughly 1,300 feet, well above the brook below. The springs are clearly
seen from the air. Two principal springs are approximately 60 feet apart, with another source approximately
1,200 feet away. The temperature of the water is 64°C.

What the government geothermal work says (verified)

In the Government of the Northwest Territories’ geothermal mapping work, this site is listed as
“Nahanni Headwater”. That report records an estimated discharge of 60 L/s and a
maximum temperature of 64°C (the hottest value shown in its table of NWT hot/warm springs).
It also includes basic water chemistry and several geothermometer estimates, with calculated subsurface
temperatures ranging roughly from ~92°C to ~142°C depending on the method used.

That same GNWT report explains that its NWT hot-springs inventory was compiled from earlier Geological
Survey of Canada work (Crandall & Sadlier-Brown) plus Protected Areas Strategy data, and notes that further
searches did not turn up additional NWT spring locations beyond those compilations.

Coordinate note

The GNWT table lists “Nahanni Headwater” at approximately 62.82, -128.83, which is close but not identical
to the GPS pin above. In remote terrain, different datasets and GPS pins can land slightly apart (different sources
may be placing the spring group, not a single vent).

Safety (because 64°C is not “soaking” temperature)

A measured source temperature of 64°C is well into scalding territory. Any pooling water would need major
cooling/mixing before it would ever be safe to sit in, and unstable slopes/seeps can hide extremely hot outlets.
